19. SOLDIERS MONUMENT AND MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN - CENTRAL PARK

One of the country’s first monuments to the Civil War dead was dedicated to Pennsylvania Governor John W. Geary, September 9, 1869. The money for the memorial was raised by the Ladies Aid Society.

The Memorial Fountain was also funded by a society of ladies who formed for the purpose of establishing this memorial on July 4, 1876 in honor of the nation's centennial. The funds were raised with difficulty and the fountain was finally finished and dedicated July 4, 1879. More recently the Robert Zabody family modernized the fountain.
