CANOE/KAYAK THE
UPPER DELAWARE
If you find yourself in the
Honesdale area on some sunny, warm afternoon and are looking for
a great adventure – look no further than a little trip on the
Delaware. Grab a boat and a paddle and choose one of the
following trip options for a great day in northeast PA.
Jump onto 191N outside of Honesdale
and head for the river. There are three different boat accesses
that you can choose from depending on how much paddling you are
interested in doing. Choose the Buckingham Access above the
village of Equinunk for your northernmost Adventure. Enjoy the
mellow ride downstream for about four miles.
At the four mile mark you will hit
the next most northern access – The Lordsville Bridge. If this
is your starting point of choice, look for the village of
Equinunk and make a right at the general store. Travel this
road for about one mile and cross the Lordsville Bridge. Park
your car and unload your gear. Access to the river is directly
below the bridge.
Start or continue your journey at
this point. And get ready to enjoy some of the most spectacular
scenery that Pennsylvania has to offer. The next eight miles is
the closest thing to Heaven in our neck of the woods.
Waterfalls, and Eagles will dominate the view and nothing but
peace and solitude will ring in your ears. This is our
definition of stress reduction! There are also several areas to
stop and take a dip in the river if the temperature permits – be
sure to look for the boulders to jump off!
Continuing down the river you will
come across Soaring Eagle Campground and the number three of our
four accesses. This is a great place to take the family for an
old fashioned camping under the stars experience. This is a
great way to end an adventure filled day on the river. Get
ready to sleep like a rock. Wake up to birds singing and fresh
dew filled air. Jump in your boats and head back down the
river.
Your destination is Callicoon, NY.
The access area is about seven miles downstream with 2 level 1
rapids along the way. Hold on and be prepared to get a little
wet if the river is up! From this point forward the river gets
very crowded. You are guaranteed not to be alone anymore.
So…whichever path down the river you
choose it is certain to be a great day or two. Make sure to
wear your life vests and beware of the people and conditions
around you . Above all have a great time!!
